NORTH KARELIA HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION

JOY OF GARDENING SINCE 1953

A garden always gives back more than it receives. –   Mara Beamish

How it all started?

The aim of the North Karelia Horticultural Association, founded in 1953, is to bring together people from diverse backgrounds united by interest and appreciation for gardening. In the 1950’s the focus of gardening was on commercial cultivation. At first, apples were the main interest of the Association: an apple exhibition was organized and apples of varieties thriving in North Karelia were forwarded to the other parts of the country.

Some people are interested in gardening for pleasure, some for a profit. Small gardens can be found on balconies or in pots on window ledges, not only in fields and allotments. A garden can be a source of flowers, vegetables and herbs. Gardening is regarded as a relaxing activity. Moreover, gardening plays an important role in our well-being offering lasting memories and emotional connections.

Gardening is a great way to expand your social circle. Meeting other gardeners in your local community who share the same interests is an easy and pleasant way to share gardening experiences and information. We would welcome you to join our Association and participate in the activities!
